چکیده

The temporal evolution of electron shadow images, formed by the projection of primary femtosecond electron pulses probe over a metal target and perturbed by the transient space-charge field near the target surface induced by the excitation of femtosecond optical pulses pump , is recorded in real time. By quantitatively analyzing the evolution of these shadow images as a function of pump-probe delay times, we are able to synchronize the femtosecond laser and electron pulses with sub-ps precision. This approach is independent of the structural dynamics under investigation and can be applied to a variety of diffraction setups and target materials using laser pulses of different wavelengths. © 2005 American Institute of Physics. 10-fs-level synchronization of photocathode laser with RF-oscillator for ultrafast electron and X-ray sources

Ultrafast electron-based coherent radiation sources, such as free-electron lasers (FELs), ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) and Thomson-scattering sources, are becoming more important sources in today's ultrafast science. Photocathode laser is an indispensable common subsystem in these sources that generates ultrafast electron pulses. To fully exploit the potentials of these sources, especia...

Generation of color centers by femtosecond laser pulses in wide band gap materials

The high instantaneous powers associated with femtosecond lasers can color many nominally transparent materials. Although the excitations responsible for this defect formation occur on subpicosecond time scales, subsequent interactions between the resulting electronic and lattice defects complicate the evolution of color center formation and decay. These interactions must be understood in order...

Short pulse laser technologies for advanced accelerator applications

Next generation short pulse laser systems for high energy accelerator physics have been developed using novel synchronization techniques. The basic techniques are the synchronization of a mode locked oscillator to an RF reference, synchronization of two mode locked oscillators, synchronization of a lowrepetition amplifier to the oscillator, and multiplexing of modular laser beams. We have devel...

Buildup of steady-state subpicosecond and femtosecond pulses in a colliding-pulse mode-locked ring dye laser.

We show for the first time, to our knowledge, that the buildup time to steady-state femtosecond pulses in a typical colliding-pulse mode-locked dye laser (lambda = 620 nm) with compensating prisms is 15 microsec after the pulses have been completely modulated. For a similar laser without the compensating prisms, the buildup time is 40 microsec and exhibits interesting oscillatory behavior in th...

Femtosecond all-optical synchronization of an X-ray free-electron laser

Many advanced applications of X-ray free-electron lasers require pulse durations and time resolutions of only a few femtoseconds. To generate these pulses and to apply them in time-resolved experiments, synchronization techniques that can simultaneously lock all independent components, including all accelerator modules and all external optical lasers, to better than the delivered free-electron ...
